Be Persistent: I'm Not Smoking Today
by Pat Mattingly
Indian Head, Maryland
United States
I have been a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 19 years.
Quit smoking before for 2-1/2 years but went back to it when my
father passed away. I made myself a promise this year that I
would give it up for Lent (that would at least give me a start on
not smoking for a period of time). At this point I have used AA
methods that are used to stop drinking to stop smoking. I just
tell myself that I am not smoking today. When the urge overcomes
me I just keep telling myself that it is only for today. So far
I have not had a cigarette since 2/23/01. I still have to be
around people that smoke and smelling their cigarettes actually
helps with the craving to smoke.
