Deep Breathing: Use Breathing Techniques

by John Paul Thomas

Manchester,
United Kingdom

Try breathing techniques. Breath naturally and concentrate on the air moving in and out of your nostrils. Feel it pass over you upper lip. Concentrate on it but don't try and alter it. Also try deep breathing. Concentrate on the air filling every part of your lungs. Experiment with it. These techniques I got from a spiritual book which was written purely to describe techniques for meditation, and breathing formed a considerable part of this. I found it helped to quit smoking. You find how heavy your lungs feel; you realise the damage you have done. You appreciate how precious each breath is. I got a great sense of mortality; if I carried on smoking I would not be untouchable; illness was such a threat. I found I began to really care for my lungs! This may sound a bit cheesy but you have to get into it. It won't sound daft if you are told you are going to die. As my brother died (though not from a smoking related disease) when he was 21, I have a great appreciation for how precious life is and how tragic it is to be destroyed. Well... hope this helps in some way...
