Multiple Steps for Quitting Smoking: Quit AND Lose Weight

About a year and a half ago I stopped carrying cigarettes with me when I went out in public, I would only smoke at home (and even then I would go outside). I bought some Nicorette gum to keep with me in case I really needed a cigarette before I got home, but after I got used to not smoking in public, it usually wasn't a problem to wait until I was home. I stopped smoking in the car also. Then recently I got a very bad chest cold and would wheeze terribly after smoking a cigarette - actually if I would smoke it would be really hard to breathe... so I couldn't smoke for a couple of days. Well, after 2 days I thought I would try to continue not smoking so I really started chewing the gum to keep down the cravings and it really is working! Another thing that I'm doing is Weight Watchers - which I started about a month ago. The good thing about this is that I have something else to focus on, am not gaining weight (I've lost 8 lbs), and I'm excersizing almost daily - which always did help to reduce the cravings anyway. It's only been one week since I've smoked but I feel very positive about being a non-smoker. I can't imagine buying cigarettes anymore. My skin already looks better and I'm not clearing my throat constantly like I was before. It just feels pretty good to be taking control of my health and my life. I felt like a prisoner to cigarettes for the last 20 years and it feels good to be free. I look forward to the 3-week mark where one article said a habit really starts to be broken or created. Hope this helps someone!
