Zyban: The Boyfriend is Now the EX-Boyfriend

I changed jobs and began working for a non-profit health Foundation. One of its primary focuses is smoking cessation and fighting the tobacco companies. I said to myself that if I were hired, I would stop smoking. Once here I asked around for some literature the Foundation produced and spoke to some of the experts in the field. To my surprise, some of these people are truly the pioneers in the field and have written numerous articles and contributed to smoking cessation program literature. Nothing was forced on me, but information and advice was given when I requested it. Finally, I was ready to set my target date. I went to my doctor and asked for a prescription for Zyban. It took all the willpower I had, but I did succeed. Since I was not a very heavy smoker, the Zyban alone was enough and I did not use any form of nicotine replacement therapy. It has been 4 months since I stopped. I am still taking the Zyban more as a crutch than because of its effectiveness. The physical craving is long gone but the psychological craving is still here. I am committed to never smoking again. My ex boyfriend is a heavy smoker. When I stopped smoking, he was not supportive at all. He said that I was making him change his lifestyle because of my quitting. He also had the nerve to say that I was no longer any fun to be around because I wouldnĘt go to smoke-filled bars or visit his friends and family who mostly are heavy smokers. That is why he is my ex boyfriend. My health and being there for my children is more important! Now I make a conscious effort to stay away from smokers. Hopefully in time, the psychological craving will disappear, but for now, staying away from smokers is not a high price to pay to keep my health.
